When teachers read books aloud to the class, it can build a student’s enjoyment of the book, different literacy language, vocabulary and knowledge about how to read. The teacher may occasionally read a book to the class which is beyond their level of reading. This experience provides the students with rich vocabulary, and syntax patterns which children may use later when they are speaking and writing (Hill, 2006, pg 89). Generally good picture books have several features which all work together to be valuable. These include characters, plot, setting, point of view, illustrations, and the overall format being able to interest the children and their imagination. (Hill, 2006, pg 115). The different image techniques used in the illustrations of a picture story book, can be explored for, colour, texture, line, perspective, design, and point of view (Hill, 2006, pg 102-105).
